Pentwater, Oceana County’s only navigable port, is situated on the eastern shores of Lake Michigan, “The Big Lake”, and Pentwater Lake and is bordered by the Pentwater River and Bass Lake. Within one mile of Snug Harbor are quaint shops, restaurants, ice cream parlors, delis, grocery stores, bait shops, Nickerson Inn, a turn of the century hotel and Restaurant, and Mears State Park on Lake Michigan. Visit the Chamber of Commerce, just two blocks north of Snug Harbor, and get information about this Historic Lakeshore Village.
Fishing is fantastic all year, and there are as many ideas about how to catch as there are kinds of fish. Many charters are available in Pentwater. Bring your own boat, use the Municipal Launch ramp southeast of Snug Harbor, and keep your trailer in our Storage Building.
In the 1940 Armistice Day storm three commercial vessels, the Minch, the Davoc, and the Novadoc were pounded by the large waves and surf and /or dashed upon the rocks and sandbar just off Pentwater. The Novadoc is marked by a small buoy off the sand dunes at Little Point Sable and is easily seen on calm days. Bring your SCUBA equipment and spend a day swimming among the fish and her hull.
Pentwater hosts several festivities throughout the summer months. Perhaps their most favored event is the Homecoming Celebration in August with a Grand Parade, fireworks, fishing derbies, and much more.
In September 2003 Snug Harbor Marina and neighboring merchants sponsored Art at the Harbor 2003 wine and cheese tasting party with an art auction to benefit the Andrea Bossee Center in Hart. Art at the Harbor 2004 and 2005 events benefitted the Region 4 Women’s Shelter in Ludington. Art at the Harbor 2006 - 2008 benefitted Harbor Hospice.
